Joke of the day

I had two more little Integrals that needed their second temper, so I was pre-heating my gas oven for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees.
What I forgot was that last night I had put a wet-molded sheath in the oven, which usually idles at about 110 degrees, so it would be dry this morning.
Well, I don't have to dye it black now, but I do need to air out the house.

It takes a self assured person to admit to a mistake, however it takes a friend to share their learning experiences with others.

I'm glad your both; thanks for the laugh.

It's branding season here in Montana...hundreds of bovines getting their hides burned! I know EXACTLY what your house smells like!

I salute you Karl! Not for burning the sheath, but for sharing! We've all pulled a stunt like that, but only "real" people will admit to it, and share it with others.

Look at it this way....you may have just started a new trend in sheaths!

Right, they can ask for them "raw" or "well done"!

Karl, Been there done it. Not only once but twice. I now use a food dehydrator. Works real good and only cost me $5.00 at a yard sale.

Karl, thanks for sharing that. It makes me feel better when guys like you do that stuff too. Bummer about the sheath though. I dislike making sheaths so much, that would hit me hard.

Since we're being so honest..........

I'll share a bonehead moment from the other day.

I made a pretty nice large-ish camp knife. Got the blade profiled, flat ground, holes drilled and tapered the tang. I turned the lights out and started my heat treating process. Quenched just fine. I set the blade down to cool and turned the lights on. There on my bench was a strangely out of place bar of 1080. I ran right to my blade and took a file to the edge and it bit right in bad. I made my customer's new knife out of my 1018 mild steel for guards! I don't know if it's good that I got extra grinding practice or bad that I ruined that guard steel and wasted the time.

I promptly shut the shop down and went fishing.

I was making a sheath for a knife that was just about to go to a customer and put the knife and sheath on top of my car to dry. I forgot about it drove to town. I sure hope someone enjoyed their free custom knife.
