I make sure there are no more flats on the scale so the pattern looks consistent (or inconsistent...?). I do this with up to a 320g on a machine, and then I hand sand up to 600g in stages. I then take it to the buffer with grey compound, but at that point it doesn't make a huge difference. 600g is cool.
That's me. Coop __________________ Jim Cooper - Capturing the Artistry and Significance of Handmade Knives ?? New website improvement for 2010 - Over 5000 images searchable by maker's name! ?? |

I just got some CF scales. What precautions do you take when grinding it?

ME? I am real lucky (read: smart) to have purchased a large 600cfm vacuum dust collector off of eBay. I aim the 4" tube at whatever belt/blade machine is spewing dust, and then I use a cartridge filter mask. Some will argue even THIS is not enough.
Before these, I used a 3M dust mask and opened the door with a fan blowing outside. Before this I used a dust mask only. Before this.... Better safe than sorry. Carbon fiber precaution
A good way to help keep some of the dust down is to wet sand.
That's my two cents. Don't forget the dust mask and good ventilation, though. Very important. |
