Hardening Help
I was given a pair of unhardened/tempered damascus blades. I think they were made in Pakistan but am not sure. What would you recommend as a quench - oil or water? I have no idea of the steel in them. Thanks for any advice.

Whew! When I saw the tile of your post, I was afraid you were gona say they were "Pakistan" damascus......It's a real crap shoot with those. I would start wtih oil, and if that won't harden them, go to water. I've seen instances where Pakistan (as well as other overseas area blades) simple would not harden. There MIGHT be a reason they were given to you!

I would heat to 1500-1525 and soak for 2-3 minutes and quench in olive oil as it may not be worth paying 26 bucks or more for a good quench oil. Do not swirl side to side in the oil and pray they do not warp to the left or right.
