Smile bolster pins

hi, i'm new to this knifemaking game and have a few questions on bolsters. #.1, how far should the pins stick out on both sides of the bolsters before peining? i plan to use NS bolsters and pins on my first real knife, i have made a couple out of OF steel and have got bitten by the knifemaking bug.also, how do you clamp them in place and still have room to hit them. can i epoxy them first?any help would be apreceiated. i live in northern wisconsin (45degrees today) and this is a nice hobby for warm spring days. thanks, jeri

The general consensus seems to be that the pin should stick out on each side by half the diameter of the pin (if I remember correctly, which isn't a given...). I usually leave it about 1-1/2 times the diameter, pound the heck out of it, then grind it flush. Works for me, your milage may vary.

If the pin fit tightly in the holes there should not be any reason to clamp the bolsters in place. The pins will keep them in place. Remember to shape the bolsters first and to countersink the holes before pinning. Rather dont use epoxy, it might show an ugly line on the finished product. There are some nice tips on how to do this in the workshop section of this site. Good luck. HAPPY KNIFEMAKING
