Today's Guild Meeting

Guys,

Christy and I had a great time at today's meeting. It was good seeing everyone and I'm looking forward to seeing the progression of work on Phillip's dagger.

I enjoyed Andy and Steve's forging demo. That's the first time I've seen a knife forged. Christy commented that she'd like to have a forge.

Thanks for doing what y'all do!

speaking of forges, how much gas do they use? What size cylinder would I need? 100 lb?

100 lb may be a little small, it don't last long heating my shop. But I don't forge.

The best forge for the money is the diamondback made in Huntersville North Carolina- Check out Diamondback Ironworks .com. They have a hard floor for making damascus and will run all day on a 20 lb bottle. They come complete with hose and regulator- ready to hook up and forge. Many models available- I have the one with the side door so I can straighten out auto front springs for material.

forge

I made my own forge from an old freon bottle. I used Kaowool for insulation, coated it with Satanite and used kiln bricks for the bottom. I got the plans from Zoeller Forge website and some of the components as well. With my regulator set at 2.5lbs psi I can use a 20lb tank for about week or so.

I always have a great time at the meetings. This was no different. I really enjoyed the Dagger demo, and I'm looking forward to seeing it progress at the next meetings. Mark, how great is it that Christi wants a forge?! Forging is lots of fun and can be addicting. A venture style forge can run just fine on a grill tank (20 lb) bottle. they will start burning the gas faster than it can convert from liquid to gas in the tank but if you're not using it a lot it's not that big of a problem. It's all about surface area of the gas - short and fat is better than tall and skinny, when it comes to tanks. I have a Diamondback forge - it's a great little forge. This said, I have made several venturi style forges that have worked just fine with stuff I bought at Lowes Hardware. If you'd like I'd be happy to give you the info on them. The forced air forge burns a lot more gas, and unless you're making damascus it might not be what you want. Steve

I did not mention making your own forge because if you are not knowledgeable about using used items such as the freon bottle- you can really cause serious health issues. Heating of the residual freon left in the bottle produces DEADLY PHOSGENE gas . Please do your research before cutting into used freon bottles.

I agree it can be bad cutting into those tanks. I was thinking more on the lines of a brick forge just stack brick and drill a hole fore the burner and your good to go . You can keep the cost down to see if its something you want before investing in a better forge . Just an option. Its all fun.....Steve
