Drawing out a feathered damascus billet

After you make the wedge cut and re-weld the billet, how far can it be drawn out? A four inch billet to 6 inches,8 inches, or what. My press has a 10 inch stroke.
Thanks
TJ Smith

Most dont draw it out at all as that will distort the pattern. Once its rewelded you then go to stock removal blade making. That is if you DONT want to distort it

I agree with Romey. Normally when making a feather pattern, you end up with a small "loaf".....I anneal the entire loaf, then take slices off it for blades.

AFTER slicing, I will often forge take a "slice" and forge the profile to shape so the pattern follows the blade's profile. (I don't try to forge in edge bevels or do any distal tapering in the forge....just so I preserve the pattern.)

OK Thanks Guys. Guess I 'll have to do a 2 stage cut and make 2 wedges. one at 2 and one at 4 inches.
Thanks for the input
