forging press

I managed to get all the major welding done today. Can't believe how much weld I poured into this thing. I also got the pieces ready to mount the cylinder. I will get the cylinder mounted tomorrow and then have to wait for some water jet parts that I will use to keep the cylinder pushing straight. It should be ready for paint next week. This time I am not using until it is painted. I usually cant wait as I want to use it and then it never gets paint.

I had to smile when you mentioned about using so much "weld". When I built my "little" "C" frame, I put nearly 30lbs of 5/16" 7018 rod into it. My MIG at the time wasn't "big" enough to handle the job, so I used the "stick" welder.

Maybe after you've "practiced" with this one, you'd be willing to take on a commission?

Loving the work in progress.....and I'm sure that by the time it's running more folk than just I will be envious!

cylinder

Here is a pic of the cylinder with rod extended and also a pic of the cylinder mounting bracket. Just going to pop out for a Tim's, as they were not open at 5:00 this morning.

That looks like you will have quite the beast when done but then it matches some of the rest of your equipment. You've made the rest of us very envious. Thanks for posting.

stiffner brackets

I haven't had much time to work on the press since we are back to work now. I did get my parts for cylinder stiffener water jetted out and I just bolted them up this afternoon so see what they looked like. Looks like there will be very little play side to side or front to back. Should make for good forging.

Jim

Got a bit more done on the presses. I built a bunch of dies for it and deciding on how to store the dies on the side of the press. Hope to have the valve an air control installed this weekend.
I have been wondering what kind of power unit I will build to run this unit. I have a desiel welder(4 cyl) that I think I will use to power a hydraulic piston pump. I just need to take the welding generator off the machine and see what I need to do to make this work.

I think you mean 5/32" rod. 5/16" rod is huge. I have never even seen welding rod that big.

Paint

Finally got some paint on the presses. They were supposed to be Dark Grey with Orange cylinders but there was no room in paint bay while they were painting grey. We had lots of room when we were painting orange, so orange they are.

OHHH!! That is NICE! Now just put some brown pin striping on them and they will match my new truck perfectly.

Remember the welding rod? It turns out it was 1/4" That was still about as much as my little welder could ever handle!

Orange Crush......

would be a nice name for these brutes .

So, when you go into production mode, what are you going to be asking for one of the beauties...haha!?

Still buried in JS knife making. I think I've redone the bevels about a half dozen times to date. Just when I think I've got things nice a smooth and pretty, lay them down on the kitchen table and see them basking in the afternoon light (in all their glory ), I see a little dimple or scratch or some other imperfection that I did not see in my shop light!

I've got six and one more ready for heat treating that I'll be putting guards on next, so I have some backup if one of them goes south. Boy, I'll tell you, this process has made me a better maker but it's a painful process .

Take care,
Dana

Jim,

I'm always on the look out for updates. They're looking great.

Hang in there Dana, pulling for you on the sidelines.

Take care, Craig
