hey all just finished this file bowie for a friend who shoots black powder reenactments he wanted a file knife he's gonna make the sheath out of rawhide its made out of a horse rasp file W-2 i think . i might still put a pin in the handle but didn't want to grined "or Clean the "OLD" of the handle he wanted it to look old so asked me not to mess with the antler to much .
this knife is 16" overall and has a 11" blade .if i knew what to put on the blade to look older i would .

That's a real eye-catcher! Very nice job! The old antler on the handle just makes it look that much meaner!!

You might could do a mustard finish on it to make it look older.

Cold Blue liquid and sling it in a cup of bleach while it is still wet. Probably want to do before the guard and handle are on though. Scotchbrite the crap out of it to get off the rusty looking moss and it looks aged after that. Try short periods of soaking first. I did a 5 minute soak first and finally got to where I was going 15 minutes on the first time and got the look I wanted. I did try a few pieces of steel first though.

And don't forget to rinse in hot water afterwards, otherwise it will keep corroding.

Hey great looking, did you have any trouble heat treating with the rasp holes, I made a bowie a few years ago but was afraid of cracks so I never heat treated it, but man it looks cool, I call it the rattler.
