Frame Lock Question?

working on my first frame lock knife and i have some questions i am hoping you guys can help me with.

1. can the lock be made from stainless? i see that a lot of guys recommend titanium for that.

2. does the lock get heat treated like a spring would in a slipjoint? or not treated at all?

thanks for your help guys,

Captain Jeff

1. If you make the locking liner from stainless, it must be one of the heat treatable alloys and must be heat treated after the liner is finished. It will warp and cause you all kinds of problems..

2.Use 6AL/4V titanium and it doesn't need to be heat treated.

As far as stainless goes, I would use: http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/produc...oducts_id=1062

I suppose 440C or any stainless would work fine as long as you gave it a spring temper

+1 to what Joe Sangster said

Additionally, people interested in purchasing knives can buy a folder made with stainless locks at their local Kmart. It has been my experience that the people willing to pay more $$ for an hand crafted knife also want it to be different than the $14.99 knife at Kmart. One way to stand out besides your superior craftsmanship is to use better materials, in this case titanium.

Titanium does cost a little more but, IMO, it is easier to work with and looks considerably better.

i appreciate your info guys!

i guess i would be better off with titanium, plus if it doesnt need to be heat treated that will save me money and time in the long run.

10es& you make a good point, thank you for your input.

thanks again,
Captain
