bevel grinding
Is there a way I can reliable grind an even bevel with a standard bechgrinder. The piece I'm working with is a thick (~1/8th") chunk of 1080 and I need to take a good portion of it down for the edge. I don't yrust mtself to eyeballin it and I don't know where to begin. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many have tried, most have failed. You can do almost anything if you really have to, especially if this is the only knife you plan to make in your life time. However, since making a knife that way will almost certainly be a disaster, and since noboday can make just one knife, you may want to spring for a belt sander.
Mark a center line along the edge and grind the steel edge up. That's the best way to get an even grind. A bench grinder makes far too much heat and the blade will be scorched and warped before you get it finished. We've had this conversation before (use the Search button to find the threads) and some people just don't want to accept that answer. One guy didn't want to spend $300 for a good belt grinder so he spent $200 on a really fancy bench grinder instead. Used it once and then he went out and paid $300 for a Grizzly belt grinder. Hopefully, you'll be more inclined to listen.... |

When I started, I did flat grinds, and I did them on a 4"x36" belt sander. Check out this thread for more:

Use a cross draw file to file it to shape. It takes a little longer, but is sure and accurate that way.Sanding paper takes it from there.
