Question what is this steel

Where can you get steel like in this picture? And what is it called?
I have never seen steel like this and was wondering about it. What is it made of, is it hard to find, etc. I believe the picture is russian but I'm not sure.

I knew it was damascas, but I've never seen damascas with a solid "border" color around the folded steel. I don't know if its a special kind or where to find it, how to make it. When I zoom in on the picture it looks like the spine has a grain in the steel so I don't think it was blued to get that effect. I just had never seen this pattern before.

I should have said mosaic damascus.some makers can get very exotic with their patterns.as far as color there are way to make color in steel such as tempering.

This is the old viking style patternweld, seen on many old swords. The core of the blade is a fairly soft (springy?) patternweld surrounded by harder, higher density patterned edge steel. I was looking at some old celtic blades last night on the net that had almost the same appearance. The second image on this page shows the same concept. I suspect that the old swords used a higher quality/higher carbon steel on the edges, with a softer core.

Thanks for thr reply guys. I am a big fan of damascus ,I hope to start tring to make some soon I just got my forge up and running, I just have never seen damascus with a "border" around the pattern. Do you know where to find any or how to make it? I read the caption under that second pic and it said 9th century. Is it still made, I wonder? I thought it might be wootz coming from a russian web page but I don't know. Any advise is welcome.

Peirre has just what I was talking about now if I could only read French . I'm gonna try and email him and see about buying some stock and maybe how he makes it. Does anyone know where to find it close by? Thanks again to everyone for responding to my questions. You guys are great!!

Before learning French and contacting Pierre you may want to try posting in Ed's forum to get the attention of the bladesmiths out there... Some of them are making this type of pattern on a regular basis.

I'm not sure if any of the damascus suppliers offer this material except as a custom order, due to the nature of the pattern following the shape of the blade so closely. Darryl Meier comes to mind as someone to check with about buying a bar (Darryl's damascus work had no small influence on Pierre's, he was one of the pioneers of these patterns).
