Solder question

Hi Steve,
I'm sorry to bother you because I bet this has been asked more than a couple times here but what type of solder did you use or suggest on your sub hilt DVD? It melted with a heat gun. I'm making a Chute Knife and want to solder the guard. I gotta tell ya I'm nervous about it.

Bruce, no problem asking.
I use Eutectic 157 and their flux, Eutecsol 682, for difficult to wet alloys. Jim Poplin offers a solder that works just as well for much, much lower cost. http://popsupply.bizhosting.com/silver_solder.html

There are some discussions on this forum concerning soldering, I'll try to find them for you. Many use the Stay-brite solder, also, with good success and have for years.

Steve, You went out of your way to help me. Thanks Steve.
My steel is S30V stainless and 416. Do you see any problems with this combination?

I would assume that the solder would work on that, but I've only done one or two using that blade steel, don't recall having any trouble with it. Let me know, OK?

I'm so scared of trying to polish S30V that I get cold sweats whenever I walk past a bar!

I spent a bunch of time hand sanding after getting it to a true 400 grit. I used a 400 cork belt with green grease and hand sanded some more up to 2000 grit. It took some time because I had to keep going back again. I do have some A6 belts but thats so fine it doesnt do much exept show scatches I missed. The final was on my 3600 rpm buffer with a 3" sewn buff and scratchless pink. The small diameter buff got into the hollows without washing out the shoulders and grind lines. It reached into the front of the guard too.

I tryed everything to hide the pins in the guard but gave up. They were supposed to be 416 pins to go with the 416 guard but bought from 2 different suppliers.
