5/16" Stock
Hello Everyone,
I have an order for a large fighter and the customer would like it ground from 5/16" stock. I called Crucible and they do not sell this thickness in any of their blade steels. They have 1/4" and 1/2" and I really don't want to grind down a peice of 1/2" stock. Does anyone know of a supplier that might have ATS-34 in 5/16" Thanks Charles __________________ Blade Show Table 19-K www.vestalknives.com http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/ |

Admiral only list up to 1/4" thick. Some suppliers might have something in 3/8" thickness that you could grind down. Actually, once the blade is ground and the tang is tapered there isn't much full thickness to thin down. Might have to push the taper back up to the guard line after the platen grinding.......
Crucible's CPM 154-CM comes in at a very heavy 1/4". The 'Chute that I'm cutting out right now is .271" thick. Their label on the bar says it ranges from .265" to /.290". Maybe Scott Devanna would pick you out a thicker piece if you asked him and if the thicknesses really do go up to .290". He is really helpful to the knifemaker. __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift |

Thanks for the info Steve.
I called Scott and he said the 1/4" stock, as milled, is usually .278 to .282. They only had one piece of 2" wide stock left so he is sending it. Hopefully it will be one of the thicker pieces. Thanks again Charles __________________ Blade Show Table 19-K www.vestalknives.com http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/ |

Hi Charles - Alpha Knife Supply has some stock that is thicker than 1/4", but no ATS-34. They do have some various air hardening steels, including a .290" 2" wide bar of CPM154CM. Of course, you do have to call and make sure they actually have it, sometimes their website isn't completely up to date.

Thanks Cap, I'll wait to see how thick the piece I'm getting from Crucible is. I may have to give Chuck a call if this piece is on the thinner end of the thickness range.
Take care Charles __________________ Blade Show Table 19-K www.vestalknives.com http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/ |
