Early 10-3 with Johnson fold over flap sheath
Some of you may have seen this little Jewel on eBay last week. I couldn't resist.
It's a 1960's model 10-3 made before there was an official 10-3. Many cool things that distinguish this little knife. At first glance the flap on this early Johnson sheath. This photo glimpsed a short 2 3/4" black Micarta handle The blade is 3 1/2" long x 3/4" x 1/8". Overall knife length 6 1/4". The sheath had to have been totally custom made for this knife, for the flap, and the exact width of the opening for this narrow blade. Here it is side by side with my more standard early 10-3. Different stamp. Of course no "S" for stainless as the early ones did not have the designation. The top of the blade has no notches, the scales are thicker than standard too. No cutout for finger placement. This little knife is 1/8" narrower than the standard 10-3 Just a cool little knife. By chance, does anyone recognize this one? I think the model 10's have been made since the 40's, and that Randall employees made these smaller knives for themselves before it was offered in the catalog. Regards, Sam |

Thanks Sligo. It does have a small handle, but with the thicker scales, using the index finger or thumb forward on the blade, it's not bad. I really enjoy the uniqueness of the knife and sheath.

Very good find, Sam!
This li'l feller just enhances your collection of unusual RMK. Cheers! David __________________ It takes less effort to smile than to frown ! |

Hey Sam!
Glad to see somebody posting again! I was looking at that knife and knew someone knowledgeable had purchased it! Congrats! I also just purchased a one-off 3" blade knife, that I wouldn't necessarily call a Model 10, just like I wouldn't call yours a Model 10. They are unique pieces! |

Thanks David and Bill.
Bill, that is a wild blade on that little knife. Double notch. Actually a triple notch! Somebody wanted to get a hellova grip on that one. Total one off. Clean sheath too. Regards, Sam Last edited by samg; 05-18-2018 at 07:28 PM. |

Thanks Sam,
It belonged to a former Randall employee of 25 years, Charles Shatzer. He probably made it specially for his needs. |

That's great that you know the history your knife Bill. Any idea of when yours was made?
With a little luck, someone may recognize mine, and know who it belonged to. I'm sure there are other examples of sheaths with snap closures made by Maurice Johnson, but I haven't seen one before. If anyone has any examples, please post pics of them. I wonder if he made that type of sheath for larger knives? Regards, Sam |

Judging by the stamp and sheath, I would say the second half of the 80's.
