Good one Big Austin.
I noticed you had to brace up the table to keep it from collapsing You sure wouldn't want to lean the vise even a slight amount though. Better be wearing steel toed boots when your working with it. |

Maybe a better way
Bigaustin.
I have used an X-Y vise to position engraving. Andy S. is correct, the way you have it set up is a hazard. You need the ball vise on TOP of the X-Y vise. I made a metal plate with a recess turned into the surface to fit the ball vise tire. This plate had a metal bar fitted to the bottom side. This bar was gripped in the jaws of the X-Y vise and the ball vise is put on TOP of the plate. That way, you stilll have the X-Y for positioning and you can more easily rotate and angle the ball vise. Much more stable and safer. I made the plate out of 12-13mm aluminum. The bottom bar is about 18mm thick by about 24mm high. Hope this is some help, best regards. John. |

I think the rotatable axis of the ball vice should always point at the center of microscope's view ,to keep the part you engraved from rotating out of view,so I set the xy vise on top of the ball vise. But you r right ,I am still afride of being hit by this big mass of metal . bigaustin |
