Mother of Pearl

I have 2 pieces of MOP. Both show grinding lines (very faint). How are these removed? What is the best method?

Once the pearl is mounted on the knife as scales, it is shaped and finished with sandpaper (I go all the way through 1500-2000 grit), and buffed. There are no grind lines left at that point.
