My latest (#3)

After listing to the wife go on and on about how she really wanted a Whustof Santoku, I decided I'd make 'er one for a 10th anniversary present This is number 3 for me...

Blade:
Mystery Metal (TM?) blade (old mower blade)
Quenched and heat treated as carbon steel
6.5" blade length, just a hair under 1/16" thick
"Custom" Brillo pad finish

Handle:
Purple Heart with polished mild steel guard and end.

(sorry for the big pics)

I had a couple of "learning experiences" with this one (no such thing as mistakes, right? haha)... I used Satinite to try to get a hamon, and I got it... Too bad I "learned" not to solder the guard on *after* getting the hamon hehe

I also learned that I need to start double checking the handle scales when epoxying them together. I thought I'd gotten 'em lined up correctly, only to find out (after the epoxy was dry) that one of them shifted just a hair, and caused gaps

Whatcha' think?

Thanks, Robert, Shane and Lucas! I know the customer really likes it, and uses it every chance she gets. She even promised to *not* put it in the dish washer, and to wipe it down really well after each use hehe

Luc, I agree with you on the handle. I was shocked to see how well it turned out (even with the gaps). I've gotten to where I tend to stop and gawk over it as I pass through the kitchen on my way to the garage.

Thanks, David!

I think I may have gotten myself into a bit of trouble with this one, though... Now she's wanting a whole matching set, including steak knives...
