IMO, a poor quench. You can do better.

Vegitable oils have a higher flash point than kerosene and motor oil often has things in it that you don't want to put into the air with a hot blade. I don't know how fast of a quenchant that mixture would be but the vegitable oil is pretty fast. If you need faster than that I would go with a commercial quenchant designed for shallow hardening steel or go to water or brine.

darrell...That mixture would probably work OK as far as hardening the steel goes, but would be very hazardous and explosive in it's nature. Placing a piece of 1500 degree steel into a pool of 80% kerosene is not my idea of a safe thing to be doing. Even ATF which is a common automotive fluid used as a quenchant, with a relatively high flash point, can be a problem if it catches on fire. With any oil quenchant, you need to be sure you have either a means of smothering the tank or extinguishing the fire should one develop.
Obviously, it is much safer quenching with water or brine when you have that option since neither present a fire hazard. |
