Conversion Chart

I've got a fair amount of 52100 in 3/4" round bars. I've been wanting some smaller stock so I decided to try something different for me. I cut a 2" piece and welded it to a 3/8" bar for a handle and forged it out by hand. When I was done drawing it out I had a 3/8" square bar that was 6" long. Has anyone seen a conversion chart that would tell you what to expect from different size round bars?

That depends on how you draw it. That 3/8"piece can be drawn into a 3/16" piece twice as long, even still.
That's the beautiful thing about forging, you can do about anything you want with the steel.

Geno, I just came in from my forge. I forged two blades out of that piece of steel. First one had a 3 1/2" blade and about a 3 1/2" tang. I had a little better than 2" piece left so I forged another one out of it. This blade was even longer than the first. I had touched up the weld on this piece before I began so the handle became part of the tang. The blade it self was close to 5" when I got done.

I did a third blade with a piece of the same bar that was 1 1/4" X 3/4" before I started forging. Got a 4" blade with a total length of 8 1/2". I'm just amazed, never really forged anything this way before. It was alway a solid bar....
