Olsen Knives - Help, what Steel??
I'm not exactly sure where to post this question, but here goes... I have a customer that is a huge Olsen Knives fan. He's from MI and visited the factory as a kid and still carries the same knife 45 years later. In any case he found out I had a few old Olsen blanks from when the company went out of business and is dying to have me finnish one for him. The reason I still have them as blanks in the first place is that I don't know what kind of steel they're made of. This particular one is a hunter style that I'm guessing is some sort of 10XX steel, possibly 1095, but I also saw a reference that some were Chrome Vanadium tool steel. If it's 10XX I'm good to go, if it's some sort of CV I'll have to do some research to figure out how to HT it (a question for another post). The blank has no markings on it so I assume it was made before Olsen started outsourcing to Germany. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

If you're familliar with spark testing, that should give you an idea if it is 10XX or something else. If you good you can get a good estimate of the carbon content as well.
There is always the possibility of sending a small sample for analysis. ron |

Thanks Ron! I'm certainly no expert at the spark test - from what I've seen and understand most high carbon steels react similiarly. I also thought about sending it out, but since Olsen was a fairly popular brand I was hoping someone around here might know what type of steel they used. I guess I'll try to HT like any other high carbon and see waht happens......
