Belt loop ?

I am designing some sheath for my knives and
I have a question. What is the standard dimentions
for the belt loop ? (for which width of belt?) is 2 inches
it enough?

Alain-

Since evrything I make is a one of a kind I don't have a set dimension - I ask the cutomer what size belt they want it made for and do that.

But generally speaking I think a 1 1/2"-2" standard loop would be about right for a hunting/ourtdoorsman sheath. For a city folk sheath I'd probably go 1 1/4"-1 1/2" since that is what most dress belts would be. 2" will cover just about any size "normal" belt - the sheath will be a bit loose on narrower belts but if you are wanting to standardize that's the way I'd go.

-- I ask the cutomer what size belt they want it made for and do that.

In my case, I proceed in the opposite way! I will finish the knife
and I will make the sheath... and after I will try to sell it !

-- 2" will cover just about any size "normal" belt

Ok, I think that I will go with 2 inches...

Thanks for your help !

Another question: Is this a good idea to make a small hole in the bottom
(or on the back) of the sheath to drain the water out of the sheath ?

Alain-
I checked a few commercial folder sheaths and all havea belt loop between 2" and 2 1/2". The widest belt normally worn is 1 3/4" (the wdith of jeans belt loops) so I think 2" is a god size to go with.

I don't put any extra holes in a LEATHER sheath. Read the following thread for my thoughts on sealing leather sheaths. http://www.ckdforums.com/showthread....threadid=16425

As to belt loops, the way I figure them I try to get the stitching down below the point of the guard area to prevent rubbing onto the threads, I also cut out a thread groove but it's just a thing I do when I get snagged for fixed blade sheaths. That will give you a longer belt loop and that can be a handy thing when the person wearing it goes to sit down, they have some room to move the sheath/angle it to make sitting a bit easier.

On small knives I made the belt loop travel all the way down to the point, no stitching inside, and just Glued her tightly at a point near the bottom of the sheath and stitched along the edge when I stitched the sheath up, now that works real well, as a small knife you can slip the whole package into your pocket if need be or raise the sheath up and clearly out of your way when you sit down. This particular sheath is about 6" long from top of sheath to tip. It's for a small Scott Cook fixed blade...mine it's a Grand knife!

Good sewing...

ps, here is a Link to the thread that shows the sheath, back, side and front views.

Thanks John!

I've since removed that fob as it made it stand out too much when wearing it at work!

I need to find some soft leather, DARK brown or Black to use to make the braided fobs, if anyone knows where or who might sell such stuff I'd appreciate it, my small supply was from a friend that did mocs and has since quit for health reasons. But he didn't have the darker colours.

Send me an email with your address - I've got a BUNCH of black and dark brown both I'd be glad to get rid of.

Got a nice box today via UPS and Chucks kindness! Thanks sir!

Funny story, the UPS tracking said that they tried to deliver yesterday but that no one was home to receive it. Bunk of course, as I knew it was out for delivery so my wife was home but no UPS.

So when I saw they updated the tracking to say they will try again the next day, today, I emailed them asking what really happened. And guess what? I received a call around noon time today from UPS in response to my email! Amazing, she was very nice and took down my actual address and not my postal address as I get mail and deliveries to one place but I live in another town, UPS normally never has a problem delivering but this time I think they ran out of time yesterday and went back to the depot.

BUT it arrived today and I do appreciate Chuck's care package and now to send that fob out to the one fellow. Much thanks sir the small pieces will come in handy!
