Blade Break Video - Brittle Blade
Howdy gang..
Broke a blade that I had made a while back. This was a 5.50" utility/tanto type thing.. It was clay backed during HT and was tempered at 400* for 1 hour. The steel is 1095 and shaped using stock removal process. After watchng the video it will be clear that this blade was too brittle. It has preformed good in the shop and has held an edge great.. I now know why.. Blade Break Video 7MB Any comments or critique welcome.. Jerid |

Any possibility of a close-up still shot of the steel grain of the break, Jerid? Thanks for sharing.

With the clay during heat treat, I've never had 1095 snap like that all the way across. I usually get a quick snap about 1/3-1/2 across. I have to straighten, then bend a second time to get it to break completely. Looks like the end got through hardened. Chuck it up again and see how it breaks closer to the handle . I agree with Fitzo, a close up scan or pic of the cross section would be neat.
Nice job on the vid...I like the "escalation in action" combined with the music. The cut during tightening the vise was done well also! What did you use for editing? |

crap.. sorry guys.. the blade went out with todays trash.. I did break it in 2 spots.. the second break farther up the blade, although a bit tougher to break, it snaped in much the same manner.. Looking at the cross section, the spine had larger grain structrue than the edge. Both were fairly crystaline looking. It definitly needed a longer temper cycle..
Don, How long are you tempering? Thanks for the compliments on the video.. I use a miniDV Sony camcorder. I have a Pinnicle DV300 caputure card that connects it to the PC. I then use Adobe Premiere to edit the video, add music, etc.. Mark, The song is So Cold by Breaking Benjamin |
