Ranger classic is junk

I ordered the ranger classic to make with a stacke leather handle. I got it all out together and it looked pretty good for my first one. I used it for the first time today to find out that it is a flimsy POS. The tang snapped. What do I do now?

Learn from it an go on. You didn't say where the tang snapped at. A pic would help, but as a guess the leather is toast... Clean up the blade and weld on a new heavier tang and restack new leather. A little elbow grease and you will still get a good knife out of it.

It snapped right where the tang connects to the blade

No offense to eiher you or Knifekits, but one look at that tang is enough to shy me away....http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/produc...oducts_id=1703

I mean it's just a long threaded rod thats been spot welded on. That thing was never going to absorb any amount of torque.

I'm new to knife making and figured it would be an easy start. I'm ok with a welder so I can prob fix this up but it's going to take some work. I thought of a ka bar or an estwing handle and liked the idea

I just want to make something rugged. I have unlimited deer horns to use and lots of wood so what would be my best fix approach?

I didn't even think about maybe it being a bad weld in the first place. If that we're the case, you might contact knife kits and see if they will stand behind th kit and send you a new one.

Honestly I think it might be a weak spot in the threaded rod. It didn't look right where it broke

Barrett,

It looks to me like a bad weld. I can't really tell by the quality of your image, but I've seen enough threaded rod style hidden tang kits to know that in rare occasions the weld is weak at the tack point. In most of them, the tack point has been qc'd, but some slip through inspection. The most common problem occurs when the joint is allowed to get too hot during welding. It serves to liquify the rod, making the joint weak. I have seen a couple with a stress crack in the weld, but that's much less common.

Of course we'll replace it! Unless you've already done so, create a ticket here (http://www.knifekits.com/helpdesk/index.php?a=add) and we'll get it out same day.
