You could make a coffin handle. Do a proximal taper on the handle to make it just as wide at the handle at the ricasso. Also do a priximal taper on the thickness. Male the widest point about 3/4-1" from the butt and taper it in a bit. Break the edges over a little on the sides to make it more comfortable to hold. One pin should hold it fine.
Here's one I did. Not the best blade so it doesn't matter that it's in the sheath but I do like the handle. IMG_0060.JPG Just a thought. Doug __________________ If you're not making mistakes then you're not trying hard enough Last edited by Doug Lester; 03-12-2013 at 09:33 PM. |

4.5" is a pretty standard length, 5" if you want a long handle ...

Get your guard finished and fixed to the blade, then shape the handle carefully and try-fit until you have it real close to what you want in shape and tapers. Glue and pin then hand finish carefully.
Line up and drill your pin holes before you start shaping the handle so you have a good flat surface to work with for the drilling step. Lot of eyeball work to align. Agree with Ray on length. Needs to fit the hand. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Was going to say what Doug said. Coffin handle. That knife wants one.

I like at least a 5" handle if it's going to be swung or chopped with. 4" for a compact knife. 4.5" is a good, comfortable length for most people if the knife is just going to be held in a fixed position. I think that would fit the bill since a dagger is primarily designed for stabbing. Not much need to choke up for carving or hold further back for chopping.

I agree with the sizes recommended previously as long as the hilt doesn't over power the blade. Try to think of the handle(hilt) of a dagger as that of a small sword. There were many styles that were traditionally used and lots of examples to chose from anywhere from plain to extra fancy.
Have fun & show us what you end up with. Gary __________________ Gary ABS,CKCA, ABKA,KGA Last edited by Gary Mulkey; 03-13-2013 at 11:11 AM. |
