How to Store Leather Stock?
How should leather stock, sides and shoulders be stored. I don't have room to store it flat, so it is draped over a 1" dowel and hung from the ceiling?
Thanks. __________________ Mike Broach Knives made to be used. |

roll it into a 10" inch cilinder with the flash side out
put a rubberband around it,,,,, and stand it in the back of your closet. |

Cooter, I'm hampered for leather storage space as well. First I "square up a side" (cut the belly and other less than desireable parts off) and then roll flesh side out and tie with a cord. Then it stands on end it a special cabinet I had bulit so that it is in the dark until I am ready to cut some of it. I'm not really rabid about it, but I think the less new leather is exposed to sunlight or flouescent light, the better. The Rolling also keeps the light off the grain side.

I know that this is an old thread, but I thought I would add a coment anyway. I keep my leather rolled and in a cabinet too. If you are a knife maker there is another consideration. Leather needs to be stored and used in a seperate room from where the blade grinding takes place to avoid the steel dust.

What's a matter Harry? You don't like the spotted pup look? Good advise, doubly nice if you have a second room. My shop in Hanging Dog will have a separate building for "clean" work. I keep mine rolled inside/out in kraft paper and stored in a closed cabinet.
Now if I'd just learn to wash my hands before I start working leather.......... Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Dad (Sandy) gave me some scrap leather pieces with cat tracks on them. Made a couple of interesting sheaths. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Carl I have been fighting it for years. I think sometimes we make dust and the knives are just a byproduct. Thought I had lost the war with some new leather I got in that came pre contaminated (handy, that way you can blame it ALL on the supplier) until Sandy let me in on the Oxalic acid treatment. No problems now and not worth the effort to send it all back.

Rolled up is the best way to store leather to prevent permanent creases, unwanted light and dust collection. A set of wide shelves is very handy for storage. Johanna |

Good to see you here, Johanna. Now if you would just make it a habit of greater frequency, we would all benefit!! ---Sandy---
