Question When to Dye?

Hello All,

When is the best time to dye a sheath? If is is dyed before molding will the molding process affect the dye? What sequence do you use in your sheath building?

thank you

I build the sheath, mold it and let it dry, then dip the whole thing in a big container of dye. Anything you do that gets the sheath wet (molding or dyeing) will give the most even finish if applied evenly over the entire sheath which is why I dip it. Others have good results using an air brush. Brushing the dye on is probably the most difficult way to get an even finish but even that can work if you do it right ...

I do all my tooling/carving, dye it (I use an air brush so its easy for me to go back and touch up if needed), then build it, and mold it. If you build it first like Ray you almost have to dip it to get the inside dyed, because you won't be able to get into those tight/inside spots. The best thing is to consider your entire sheath and think out the process before you get to far.

It depends...
I dye last if the thread is the same color or darker than the dye. If I want a white thread on a black sheath (or other contrast), of course I will dye it before stitching, but after tooling. I don't dye before assembly because you usually end up having to make corrections during assembly which may expose un-dyed leather in the process. I use a foam applicator brush in a circular motion to apply the dye to prevent streaks. I like the air-brush idea but haven't tried it yet. if you dye before molding your dye may run or wash out, depending on what you use. A water based dye will stain / run if you use water to mold your leather. I use acetone. It doesn't cause stains on un-dyed leather and dries instantly, but will make dyes run - even solvent based ones.
