New Guy.
Well, I guess that i better introduce myself. My name is Jeremiah and I am a college student. I am a woodturner as well. A co-worker at work who makes blades has got me into starting a small forgery at my house where i wish to make some this fall. I have dealt with wood nearly all my life and I would like to try some metal. Thank you all in advance.

If your good at woodworking then the battle is half over for you. Most knives have wood handles and even if your an ace at grinding and hammering you can still have a crappy looking knife if the handles were not done right. Knowing the properties of the different hardwoods and how to work them best will be a great asset for you.

The hilt/hand grip is just half the problem I have. What I need to learn now is how to forge a blade. I have bought a couple of books by Jim Hrisoulas. But just wondering, for a newbie what kind of propane forge should I get? And what specific tools along with that. THanks in advance.

Just remember forgery is a federal offence. On the bright side, fed time is alot easier than state time.

We'll do our best to help you get started but for the most concentrated info in these forums where forging is concerned you should check out Ed Caffrey's forum. That's all they do there.
As for the forge, you should build one yourself. I just built my first one (with some help from these guys) and if I can do it, anybody can. Also, it's a lot cheaper than buying one! There are a number of ways to get help with these things. One is to Search the forums, you might try 'venturi forge', 'blown forge', or maybe 'forge plans'. Another is Caffrey's forum and to a lesser extent, this forum. Finally, you should finish filling out your profile to include your location. If people know where you are, they can do some pretty amazing things to help.... |

When I set out to buy a forge I did a google search for "propane forges" I found only three companies that sell them and about two hundred websites on how to build them and supplies to build them. I took that as a hint that it appears way more people are building them then buying them. I built mine in less then one weekend, but it did take some time to chase down some of the specialty parts materials.
You can save yourself alot of grief if you contact Ed Cafferey and order his plans for $10. |
