How does one talk a Damascus maker

Hi all
I have been looking for a unusual pattern piece of Damascus for a few days now. I would like something other then twist or ladder or birdseye etc.. I have seen a couple petterns I like on knife makers web sights. But I get no response from them. I would like to obtain a piece of custum made Damascus perhaps mosaic 6 to 8" x 1 1/4x 1/8 long. My Question is how do you talk a forge owner to sell you a piece? Its harder then I thought it would be.

That's true, I've had that same problem and we shouldn't be having it. Simple truth is they have busy lives too and don't look at their emails, and a few are just lousy business men.

You might try posting on Ed Caffrey's forum since most people there make damascus and would see your post. Also, get catalogs from Sheffield's and from K&G. They often have pattern weld damascus in other than the three main patterns you mentioned. For mosaic, you'll probably have to find a maker and you should expect the steel to be more expensive (sometimes MUCH more expensive)....

Here is a sample reply I usualy get..............
Terry,
Thanks for your interest in my work. Unfortunately, I do not sell the
Damascus.
Thanks again,

I dunno if they would think i would take credit for it or what. maybe I should explain i don't want it to sell i want it for a personal knife I plan to keep give them full credit etc.

It is highly possible that considered the time involved to make it is not work selling when they can make a finished blade and a heck of alot more money for time spent. Also most are pushed for time and find it hard enough to find time to make it for themselves. Just keep trying and eventually you might catch someone with extra that they are willing to part with.

hi Mark
i know it is a lot of work and all. I Was thinking that because it was a lot of work they make billets longer then needed to make a particular knife and would have extra pieces of billets they have produced. and would like to add to there income by selling one measly piece, lol. But what do I know about the forging bussiness. Perhaps they reuse the left overs to make other billets or other products. just wish one would take petty on this old fart and sell me a piece.

Ahhhhm, Mark.......Didn't i see that you forge Damascus? I think I been to your page Muller forge? if so You all make some pretty damascus also, But I remember the name as Jody . Think I even e mailed you all about selling me a piece

God Bless Ya
Terry

There are a few people who make mosaic damascus for sale: Robert Eggerling, Chris Marks, Gary House, in no particular order. The only one of those with a website is Chris Marks, but if you search on these forums a little you'll find the contact information of the others.
