Stretching the skills
Hello all,
I know I spend more time lurking these days but I do try to continue my education in knives. I recently got a couple nice sets of mesquite scales from Arizona Ironwoood and a previous customer approached me on the making of a bowie. Gent is a flag waving, attitude full tilt who doesn't live that far from the Alamo and has always wanted a custom bowie. Add the Texas State Wood and you have a perfect combo. I am using the Bruce Evans tutorials http://beknivessite2.homestead.com/guard.html Got most of the stuff in and started working on the blade. Moving slowly, one as this is new stuff for me and I want to not screw up but also working with 24" of metal is HEAVY!!! I decided to leave the cutting of the tang until after I at least finish sanding the blade so I have a good handle to grip. This is the first time for me working with so thick of steel, 3/16", a blade this big, 2" X 9", and the cutlass grind is uncharted territory for me. A lot of new challenges when working on something that big when use to 6"-9" OAL blades! Bruce's tutorial seems to be leading me done the right path so far. Got the blade ground and have moved on to sanding. The customer wanted it documented so I've been shooting it as I go but there is still so much to go I'm not sure I'm up for him seeing how really sloppy it looks in the transitions Big sucky part of this is I have to send it out for HT as my oven can't even think of fitting the blade so I have to ship it out and almost all the places have extra charge for the extra long blade. I have emailed Paul Bos as I had thought he had retired but the site is still up and there are references of him HT blades fairly recently. Any advise or warning would be appreciated, Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |

Jim,
If you are making a knife with a 2x9" blade why are you hauling around a 24" piece of steel? And, what kind of steel is it, anyway? I doubt I know anybody to do the HT for you but knowing the steel would sure help. In any case, glad to see you back here.... |

The 2 x 9 is just the blade portion -
I will trim the handle to stick tang once I have the blade sanded. The steel is 440C. I got a reply from Paul Bos, he has retired but his replacement, Paul Farner, has been trained by him for 15 years so I feel I could trust him Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |
