Reminicent of ol' Primal Fires Days

Gentleman got this as a Christmas Present from his son yesterday morning. Might say he was a bit more than just pleased. A few years ago one of GA's many small, mean tornadoes destroyed the family farm's barn and out buildings along with several trees. This is a several generations farm. His son "commissioned" me to make his Dad a knife from the barn remnants. We talked and did some figuring (long distance as he's in Riddleville) and arranged a meeting with salvaged materials. Well short story long - here's what I came up with: Blade (6") forged from old plow shear, Fittings from busted early 1900's tractor wrench - including Cross, Handle from blown down pecan tree stump, Stand from barnwood, Hinges from barn door, Square nail props from barn construction. Sheath is only thing not salvaged material - Buffalo hide with square nails for rivets. I had a lot of fun putting this together, figuring things out as I forged the blade. Enjoy.

Is there a photo Carl? I can’t see it. It sounds really neat.

Christmas Present 2

It shows for me, but seems a little large. I'll try thumbnailing it. Tell me if this worked Dana.

Was thinking back to the days we were doing the total salvage/recycle builds on PF the whole time I was putting this one together.

Here's another totally "recycled" materials knife I just finished.
It's inspired by an archeological find somewhere along the North Sea, Norway maybe. Friend of mine brought it by for me to have a look (see pic). After some deep research we determined it was a particular style of seax. Researching sheaths/scabbards was all over the page so I kind of mixed designs a bit.
Anyway, the blade is forged from bearing race, the furniture is hammered bronze from Navy scrap yard in Charleston, SC (been dragging around for way too many years), the handle is wormy white oak from firewood pile, and the sheath is leather from an old tossed out ottoman cushion. Had a lot of fun putting this one together and it is quite a wicked belt knife. My blade is 6.5", a bit longer than the artifact. Really love handling the original forged stuff. Can't tell from the rusty pic but up close you can see the hammer work.

@Crex: You didn't use the rusty blade, but used a bearing race to forge the new blade? The whole package really looks good - give yourself a pat on the back from me

Nah, the artifact was not mine to use. Just something to inspect and handle before going back to it's display cabinet in another state. I wouldn't have "messed" with it anyway with it being an artifact. Pic just wouldn't expose the forge marks through the rust, but they were there. Was an intriguing design and not my norm, so had to make one just cause.
