Kydex and rare earth magnet

Hey All

I'm making my first kydex sheath and am wanting to put a magnet in for retention. Any tips on the best way to fasten it?

Thanks in advance
Adrian

Adrian-

Use the blue search button up top (between faq and home) for rare earth magnets. I know they've been discussed here. If you don't find the answers let us all know and if we don't hear any thing in a couple of days I'll call out the cavalry!

Did a search and didn't find what 'm looking for.

I'm thinking of forming the kydex around the magnet, and then either using a generous amount of epoxy or glueing a small piece of suede over top the magnet.

Is epoxy the best glue to use?

I did a quick look - Don Cowles is the man when it comes to using the magnets. He uses Barge (contact) Cement to attach his magnets. I would think epoxy would work fine though. You might drop Don (just look him up in the members list) a Private Message and see if he can give you any more advice.

Here's another tip - find a shop that disposes of old computers -- home computers, business machines -- the hard drives have 2 (sometimes 4) magnets in the sealed box just below the disk. I got a bunch of them for free -- not a big deal, they're not that expensive, but why not if they're just gonna throw them away?

Depending on the style of knife you are sheathing, you may not need a magnet for holding the blade in the sheath. When done correctly, kydex will hold without any help. If you have a guard or finger grove just use a little extra pressure when forming. The knife should snap into place......jc

I am using leather rather than kydex, but I do form it around the magnet, and use Barge cement to glue it in place. I then cover it with goat or pig skin to keep it in place and prevent scratches.

Should work with plastic, too, but be sure to warn the users to keep it away from their computer equipment and their credit cards (and their pacemakers!).

Thanks Guys

I'm thinking of forming the magnet into the kydex with a little extra space around it, then filling it with epoxy and sanding it flush. This should secure the magnet and when sanded down prevent scratching of the blade.

Think it might work?

here's some more info:
http://ckdforums.com/showthread.php?...+earth+magnets

mentions using epoxy - note though as stated in this thread that the magnet will attract grit and the blade itself will beome magnetized so keeping your blade and the inside of the sheath clean will be imperative if you want to avoid scratches.

Hey Guys..
Abirch...

In my humble opinion.....

Using magnets in a kydex sheath is utter nonsense, a gimick, and an absolute waste of time and effort....

Besides the fact that you are magnetizing the blade for no good reason, you will be introducing foreign magnetic particals into a perfectly good sheath...

In Don's case, it's a completely different situation, and justifies the use of magnets....

With a synthetic sheath however, all the retention and holding power you will ever need is right in the synthetic material itself.

All the magnetic particals that you pick up with your blade, will be instantly transfered to the magnet, each time you insert the knife.

And with every insert of the knife a new scratch will appear...

Literally opening a can of worms..

Stay away from them,, make your synthetic sheath properly, and you won't need them What So Ever...

Thanks Eric, and I think your right. I made one using a magnet, forming the kydex around it and covering it with some suede. I can't tell any difference between that and a kydex sheath with no magnet.
Oh well, lesson learned. If you don't try new things...
