Graduation time...
...is late June. So since I went to the NCCA knife show this past weekend, I picked up a 'graduation' present to myself.
I bought, paid and have sitting on the floor of my condo garage, the KMG-1 'Professional Knifemaker's Grinder' from The Koval knives folks. They had a display model, and made me a late Sunday offer so they wouldn't have to drive that beast back to Ohio. I wheeled it out of there on a handtruck... What do I know about grinding blades? Nothing. What do I know about good equipment? You'll never regret buying good stuff, and starting an inventory to grow. I don't even have a bench for it, nor a motor, etc. It'll be a while before I make any dust from this. Nonetheless, It's MINE and I'm stoked about the future! Mick Koval said, heck, I could tear through making kits on this in about an hour!!! Well...., right. Just not what I *really* want to produce--banging-out ordinary kits. I'll take this moment to openly thank Kelly Carlson for the good advice and friendly push he offered. His knives, BTW, are awful #### good--both his kit's and his own! Kelly THANKS! As I was wheeling it out, I commented to a young knifemaker (Kurt Meerdink) "I have more ambition than skill...". He followed me out to the lot and gave me his card and offered me to spend a day as an apprentice learning from him. Isn't that just the way it goes around here??? This should be fun. Now back to work on my latest folder(which is taking too much time!) Coop (Oh, and I showed off my carbon DDR-1 to *anyone* who would look , and it was met with some very nice acclaim. Even Mick Koval and Darrell Hibben were impressed!) __________________ Jim Cooper - Capturing the Artistry and Significance of Handmade Knives ?? ####, Coop that's a good score. I wish I had the cash for one of those beauties, first thing I wouldnt be too worried about the motor, I'd grab the cheapest grinder I could find and cannibalise the motor - at least you could grind untill you get the pukka dirve.
Any idea how much a kmg-1 would cost to ship airfreight to the UK? I s'pose I could sell my car |

We could all see this coming a few months ago Coop
Good score. So now you're all set for new blade shapes and steels... [Not even thinking about people shipping grinders over the Pond] Roger |

I was tempted to leak out the news last night, but, since I restrained myself, figure that's worth super tune on one of my Ducatis???
Looking forward to seeing your early results. |
