O1 STEEL STAINING
I"VE MADE SEVERAL FOLDERS OUT OF O-1 WITH SATIN FINISHES THEY STAIN WHEN USED. IS THERE ANY WAY TO PREVENT ? WHAT DO THE PRO MAKERS THAT USE O-1 DO? |

O1 will stain or patina because it is a carbon tool steel (it's a prelude to rust), the only way I know to minimize this is to mirror polish it. Personally I don't have a problem with a patina on a knife blade but I do know plenty that do. Regards from Australia. |

Re: O-1STAINING
Yeah, just like Neil said, mirror polish is your best bet, I make 99 percent of my knives from O-1 , in particular I have been carrying a folder of mine for two years now and haven`t had much of a problem. ( mirror polish though ) and when it does patina you can get rid of it real quick using the buffing wheel. Another Idea might be to give it an acid etch finish, supposed to help prevent rust and discoloring, but I haven`t really tested it yet. |
