heat treating class or workshop

Hello Folks,

I consider myself solid in the basics of knifemaking, but one of the things that's always vexed me has been getting my heat treats consistent. I know when they're good, but it just seems like I have trouble with certain things, like getting thicker blades to heat up evenly or not OVERheating thinner blades. I was wondering if anyone's heard of a class or workshop out there that focuses on heat treats. That is, I'd love to spend a week working with someone really experienced in this so that I just get the process familiar to the point of being able to repeat it consistently for a really good heat treat. Any help in that area would be great.

If I was in your shoes, I would try and find local makers and hammer-ins. There is always the school of learning from your mistakes. Best of luck, hope you find a means to an end.

...There's lots of really good books on the subject of heat treating, but repetition doing something is going to help the most. Look for a mentor in your area who is willing to help, and it might be good to make lots of notes to yourself while you work, this is something I do to help me remember what I'm trying to master. I hope this helps you, at least a little........ Remember.... hit it while it's HOT!!!
