nail nick
What is the best way to get a nail nick in small folder blades without having a milling machine and a dovetail cutter or fly cutter? I have a cross slide vise and a pretty good drill press but am not sure if it is possible to do and I dot't really want to invest the money in a cutter if I don't think it will work. If anybody has any suggestions, or has tried this please let me know.
Thanks Jason:confused: |

I have heard of people who rig up a clamp to hold the blade, then use the edge of a hole saw to cut the nail nick. The blade is held edge up, angled slightly away from the hole saw. I have never tried this, but it seems like it would work.

harbor freight (among others) sells inexpensive diamond coated wheels and a mandrel for motor tools (dremel, etc). the wheels are about 3/4" dia. dremel also makes an abrasive wheel more like 1 1/4" dia.
i haven't tried it, but would be willing to bet that you could use one of these in a drill press and rig up a fixture to hold your blade in the cross-vise to make a decent nick. __________________ wayne things get better with age ... i'm approaching magnificent |

A dremel tool with a metal cutting blade will work. But you can't free hand it. mount the dremel in a low vice, clamp your blade on a thin piece of board, place the board blade up under the dremel, lift the blade from one end to the cutting wheel. I have a strip nailed to the bench where I do this. I place the far end of the board on the strip to keep it from slipping and then raise the close end of the board. If my this isn't clear let me know and I'll try a diagram. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try these tips with some scrap when I get a day off work. I already have some dremel cut off wheels so maybe it'll work. I'll post a new thread if it does.

The best way is to grab your blade in the vise on the cross slide table and chuck the dremel mandrel with an abrasive cutoff wheel in it. This will give you better control and you cna move the drill press table up and down till you get the height where you want it.

Just to let everybody know I chucked up a abrasive wheel in my drill press and along with the cross slide vise it worked great but takes some practice on getting everything lined up.
Thanks for the pointers! Jason |
