First you need to fill out your profile and let everyone know where you're from. Second start looking at craigslist and eBay. Tell everyone you know that you're in the market for an anvil. You'd be suprised how many ppl know where to buy one or someone who has one buried in a old barn. Make sure you know what you're looking for in a anvil. Size, rebound, features. They all mean something. Good luck.

They run in small herds like turtles, just have to watch out for the stampede.
The fellas above are right, they are out there just have to do due dilligence. Try heavy industrial areas, they tend to show up there as well, know there are a lot in Destin.......(Joking). __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Anvil
I got an 8" section of railroad track and had a guy build me a stand. He made the stand dead and welded the track to the stand. My stand sits on a piece of carpet and works great for peening pins, etc and much cheaper than an anvil. Just another idea. I have seen other knifemakers with a RR section in their shop as well. Good luck.

RxR track makes a decent bench anvil for the purposes you have mentioned, however it is a bit light weight and springy for serious forging (not to mention loud). However, use what you have until you can find something better. My first anvil was a block of marble headstone. Still have it and it works fine to a point. One of my favorite make-shifts is a broken forklift tine. It only weighs in at round 60#s, but all of it's mass is straight below the hammer. Surface is only 2"x6" but one heck of a "finishing" anvil.

I found a 8X6X4 block of steel on Ebay that weighs 81 lbs and it really moves steel with all that mass under the work surface. Old World Anvils will sell a 4X4 piece of 4140 cut to length. Twelve inches will give a a heck of a post anvil. Knife anvils were pretty much just blocks of steel.
Whatever you do stay away from cast iron anvils unless they have a good steel face forge welded to them. Solid cast iron anvils are probably best used as boat anchors. Doug __________________ If you're not making mistakes then you're not trying hard enough |

One other method, get the word out about what you do. I'm in a retail business that allows me to get to know a lot of people. The other day a gentleman called me wanting to sell an anvil. Yep, I bought it. Now I have one to many, not to mention a large RR track anvil I started. A good problem to have. If you are in the Winfield Alabama area Sept 26-27 I will be set up. I will have one or both anvils for sale along with other knifemaking supplies. That's just secondary to the knives that I'll have.
