Idaho trout fillet with green micarta
I just finished this up last night. An "Idaho trout fillet" blade from texas knife supply, finished with green canvas micarta scales, red vulcanized liners and mosaic pins. The scales are ultra smooth - polished to 2000 grit. The blade has a hand rubbed 800 grit finish. The sheath came from Texas Knife Supply, too, and has been fitted for the blade.
I made this as a surprise gift for a friend . . but I'm having second thoughts!! Heh. I think I need to make another one ASAP. Close up of handle - I just noticed that little rough spot on the left - will fix tonight. The ugly shots (just after epoxy): |

Very Nice! Can you make a suprise one for me too? That Micarta takes on a great moire pattern when it is carved into rounded shapes. Love it.

That looks great. I'd love to get a gift like that. Incidentally, you mention a rough spots on the handle. Rough handles are great for fillet knives. They help you maintain a grip in all that blood, water and fish oil. Maybe you can make your next handle a little more grippy. Very good work.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! This is my 9th kit knife. I've also made 5 steak knives in black micarta, 1 DDR3 in carbon fiber, and 1 carving set in green micarta and red liners.
Regarding the slippery handle, I've found that the polished micarta can be a bit slick when dry, but as soon as it gets wet it gets really grippy. |
