Forging is primitive, backwards and crude.

Forging is a good way to ruin a piece of steel.

Forging gives you a reason to be creative. Forging gives you the satisfaction that you can create something of real and honest beauty, with a useful purpose.

why forge??

"Everything a boy could want, dirt, fire, noise", words of a friends mother when he gave her a tour of his shop.

Are you saying that forging is more masculine than stock reduction?

I'm not trying to make a better knife... I'm trying to make a knife better.

No gender intended. In and around Puget Sound (Seattle area) there are many blacksmith and hot metal shops with quite a few female smiths doing excellent work for homes, businesses, and art galleries (sculpture). It's a real hot iron community here in the Pacific NW.

Sweany, that's the first good point I've heard yet! You da man! You can't take a 3 inch piece of 1/2 inch round stock and turn it into a 4 inch piece of 1/8 by 1 inch piece of flat stock, with a belt grinder.

Sweany, you might be a little silly and off center at times... but when push comes to shove, you've got it where it counts bro!

Like I said, you and I are not much different.

When people ask me why I like blacksmithing (and therefore bladesmithing) my answer is always the same:

"I get to play with fire, I get to hit stuff. It doesn't get much better than that!"

Most people seem to get the point. I sometimes continue:

"I get to make things which can't be made any other way."

If they still don't get it I leave them to their lives of television, television and more television....

Roger
