lockbacks, lock area?
i was just wodering, when you make a lock back, how much do you have the lock bar go i to the tang mine is probably 3-4 mm but it means that i trhe have to push the back of the bar a log way down before the blade dissengages, and i dont like the look that gives the knife because of the large notch on the back of the handle. so basicly my question is, how much is enough
i hope i havnt confused you as to where im talking about. Brett Holmes |

Hello Brett,
Believe it or not, you don't really need much of a notch at all. If you have a nice fit up with the tooth and the notch, and no slop in your pivot, it takes very little to keep the knife locked. However, you do want enough of a tooth so that if you bump to lock release area it does not disengage the lock. On my scale release autos, which work like a lockback by the way, I usually go about 1/8 inch wide and about 1/8 inch deep on the short side. Hope that helps. -chris |

Hello Bret,
My lock slots are about.050" deep on the short side next to the round end. How deep you have to push the lock also depends on the pivot location on the locking bar. Move the lock bar pivot back to decrease the amount of distance, or forward to increase the amount of travel needed. I hope that makes sense (move the lock pivot back) |

mine are probably the depth of chris's but are wider, so i think i might decrease the depth a little to be more like gene's and i should also move the pivot back because now that i look at it, it is quite far forward a little more than a third of the legth back, how far do you normally put it back i was thinking maybe half way.
thanks guys, Brett holmes |

!/2 way for traditional lockbacks,2/3 for scale release(extreme), or somewhere in the middle for the rest.
1/8" is a lot on pivot leverage. Be blessed, |
