No 65 - Danny's Skinning Axe

Here's something I was happy to complete. I'd intended to take it to the Chicago show to meet Steve and Lloyd and the rest of my heros but the timing didn't work out and I missed the show. Hopefully I'll get to go next year.

Anyway, about a year ago a friend of my brother's and mine came to visit (my wife threw a major 50th birthday party for me; folks from all over!). Before he left Danny made a small sketch of a skinning axe he'd been thinking of and asked me to make it for him. Lots of time passed and finally I took a shot at it. I got a little carried away.

13" overall, 4 1/2" blade
1/4" O1 differentially hardened
Tang is fileworked all the way around
Black paper Micarta, red fiber liners
A few mosaic pins; the rest are 304 SS

The handle is fairly ergonomic and provides about four different grips. It's fun to play with! If I learned anything from this project, it's that I'd rather not cut so much 1/4" stock... Hope you like it. Coop did a fantastic job of photographing this thing. The day he showed me the pics I went around grinning like a fool for hours.

Awsome, Dave. That must have take a looonnnnnng time!

How to you get the fiber to follow the file-work cuts. I thought it was an epoxy filler. Sorry I'm so dumb!

Dave, That is so cool! Very nice work! It's obvious you're proud of it and you should be. Thanks for sharing Coop's terrific image and your own enthusiasm for having built this beauty!
Buddy

Thanks gents! Steve, it's actually both - colored epoxy and fiber liners. Buddy I had a good time working on this and put a lot into it - because it made me. I'm glad it's finished but I hope something else comes along eventually to suck me in the way this one did. Lloyd I remember Steve saying he wasn't going to be able to make it. Maybe we'll all make it next year. I sure hope so. Thanks again, it means a lot coming from all you folks.
