RK grind

Hi..I have done various searches on this forum but am unable to find the answer.

My question .....What type of grind to RK have, are they flat, hollow or convex..or do different models have different grinds.

Thanks.

Great forum.

Sir,

All RMK's are hand-ground and have slightly hollow grinds.

Some more or less than others due to their intended purposes.

Welcome to the forums!

Thanks DW......Would you or anyone be able to tell me what size wheel they are ground on?........I am asking this out of my own curiosity as a knife maker and as someone who admires Randall (and Scagel) knives.

Thanks.

DW, I have a Nordic Special bowie that appears to be flat-ground rather than hollow-ground. Is this unique, one-of-a-kind? ...or am I just imagining a flat blade?
Thanks, Scott.

Steve,
...I think all the Nordic Special Bowies have been flat ground. DW was probably dreaming about the Seminoles being good at something important when he answered the original question.

RMK does not flat grind anything.

The Nordics are just one of the blades with a slightly different grind from top to bottom.

We use an 8 x 1 1/4x 5/8 wheel for grinding, all hand ground underneath the stone.

Thats very interesting. You mention a 'stone', is that a stone on a bench type grinder?........I visited RK several years back and remember seeing the bench grinders set up.

The 'underneath' the stone technique is also interesting...thank you.

DW,
..I am amzed that you all can make a blade that looks so perfectly flat ground using a wheel. I would ask you to post PICs of the process but I think it would probably take a video for me to truly understand how it is done. And then maybe I still would not understand.

Coutel: yes, we use bench grinders. If you look at the catalog on page 5, there is a pic of Pete Hamilton eons ago final shaping a hilt and handle. We still do the same today. When we are grinding blades we just use the bottom of the wheel as we grind.

Steve: I'll see what I can do to get your orders moved up!!!--

Jeff: That is grinding, stoning, sanding and polishing, all to keep the Nordic Specials with the "appearance" of a flat grind. It does take quite a spell to "master" this!

DW, Thanks for your explanations of the grinding process and for solving the "GREAT NORDIC FLAT GRIND MYSTERY"!

The case of the "Nordic Specials'" phony flat blade appearance has always been a puzzlement to me. Along with many others I always thought that the blade was flat ground. The new light shed by one of the greatest Red Sox fans in baseball history makes this knife more desirable in my humble estimation. (Baseball is played on flat ground, so I just assumed...)

Cheers!

Moosehead

P.S. Aren't "bench grinders" nervous ball players?

P.P.S. Seriously, THANKS!!!

GO RED SOX!!!
