What size Screws?
Just wondering what size screws you guys use on folders? 0 80, 1 72, or 2 56 And what kind of heads? Button, flat, or socket head cap screws. Lets say for a small gents knife 3 inch blade folder or little less. |

I'm in the process of tooling up to make a few liner locks and after some research I'm going for 2x56 flatheads and buttons heads. I'm making a similar size folder to the one you have referred to and I feel that 0x80 are definitelt too small and 1x72 are marginal, and I believe it is better to err on the side of strength rather than risk the piece not being strong enough. |

Neil, I use 1-72 on my bolsters and to hold the spacer bar on liner locks and the back spring on lockers. I use 1-72 spline socket on the bolsters and 1-72 flat head on the back spacer and 1-72 button head on the handle scales. I have found the 0-80 to be to fragile and hard to tapp with out breaking tapps. The 2-56 are to big for most of my folder handles and bolsters. I use 2 or 3 1-72 screws to hold the bolsters on The blade pivot bolt is counter sunk under the bolsters and will not show. On stainless steel liners and bolsters I use a Miller spot welder 220v-single phase with a capacity to weld up to 3/16" thick stainless. On these I use a special corby type pivot bolt for the blade. Hope this is of some help. For me to use any thing larger than the 1-72 it has to be a big folder. I make a 6" blade liner lock that is almost 14" overall on this one I use the 2-56---------REGARDS RADE |

Pivot-4-40, 2-56 Stop 2-56, 1-72 Slabs, scales, thumb stud etc... 1-72 0-80 I find very small I only use this screw when I'm forced to, it would take a really small knife. As far as screw heads I preffer counter sunk torks this is only for looks button heads will work fine and save you a step. |

screws
I use all three sizes & all three heads, depending on the look I'm after, the 0-80's are small & delicate but on a small knife they work fine. Knock on wood, I've only broken two taps & have made probably 25 liner locks. I just made a small one for with a 2.5" blade, 3-1/4" closed, every screw on it is 0-80, even on the 3/16" pivot pin. Works like a charm, smooooooooooooooth! Dwayne |
