Finally
Hey all, haven't posted here in a long time but now I'm back and will soon be making knives again.
Last october (almost exactly a year ago) my grinder, a 2"x10" cone-loc sanding drum with a 1 hp motor, flew apart at full speed and destroyed itself. Luckily the wheel was the only casuality. It could have been a bad situation. Since then I have slowly been plugging away with files and sand paper. Yesterday on kijiji (Canada's version of Craig's list) I found a baldor 2x48 with a 1.5 hp motor for $500 with a big box full of various new belts. I will be picking it up this weekend and hope to be flinging sparks again soon after. I'm a very happy guy right now. StaySharp Jason __________________ StaySharp |

Got the new grinder home today and found a spot for it in my little garage shop. Decided to re organize in order to make it a bit more user friendly in there. Once I finally got the grinder set up and bolted down, I spent some time familiarizing myself with the operation of it. Took me a moment to discover the small lock that holds the top wheel down while the belt is changed. I have never used a tool rest before and felt ot was just in the way so I took it off. Had to adjust the platen as there was a good 1/8" gap between the belt and the platen. Just moved it forward untill it barely touched. Had a blank that I had messed up during profiling on the old machine, I reprofiled and ground in bevels in about 5 minutes, man this baby eats steel! It is quite loud, had no ear plugs handy so ears are ringing a bit.

And it has a serrated contact wheel too! That's good news, the serrated wheels run cooler and cut smoother....

Yeah, the serrated contact wheel. As far as I can tell the machine doesnt pivot in order to actually use the contact wheel.

If you cannot access that contact wheel, then this was no bargain.
Set up the bench or base in such a way that the entire machine is tilted back to around 45* or so. Then lose the work rest or put a wing nut on it for quick disconnect so it is out of your way while working on the wheel. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

However..., the more I look at the pictures, the more I question whether or not you'll be able to clear the motor and base enough to hollow grind to both sides.

Even if i cant use the wheel to grind on, it's still better than the cone loc I was using before it flew apart last year. I was just planning to use the platen to grind on.
