Bowies

Bowies

Here are a couple bowies that are going to forumites.

The first is for my man Randy. It's a fighting bowie 10.5" forged 5160h blade, ss fittings, and a claro walnut handle. The handle is only slid on in the photo, I'm debating on applying another coat of oil. This blade has the best taper I've been able to acheive; the point is very thin and VERY pointy. I poked myself with it many times, even before it was sharpened.

The second bowie was forged from 1065, 7.25" blade, clay coated heat treat, ss guard, bronze ferrule, amboyna burl handle. I'm pretty happy with the hardening line, I learned quit a bit from this knife and I'll be applying it to future hardening lines.

I purchased the handle material over a year ago, I was reluctant to use it because of the sap wood. Initially I thought it would have a great contrast. I thought about using it on several other knives, but I always hesitated. I decided to go through with it, and I'm glad I did. I'm happy with the color combination of bronze, amboyna, and stainless.

Thank you very much for the compliments .

The walnut was very difficult to finish, much more than usual at least. The last week or so has been very hot and humid. The oil refused to cure. Each coat took at least a day just to become tacky. I'm reconsidering my finishing technique now. Maybe I'll try Balistol on the next one.

Thanks again.

Matt
