Welcome to CKD.
Stabilizing is a process, in which liquid acrylic(for one), is forced, by pressure, and vacuum, into the wood. It is a through and through process.
At the end, the wood is heated to solidify the acrylic.

What you end up with( for all intents and purposes), is a piece with the durability of a man made material, but the beauty of natural wood.

Yes it can be done at home.
There are a ton of threads on that subject here, as you will see if you use the search function.

another welcome to ckdf, kennesm.
to put this into perspective for you, the process is similar to the one that orvis used to use to impregnate their bamboo battenkill blanks. do they really flyfish in texas?

Thanks for enlightening me.
Thought it sounded like impregnating.
Sure we fly fish in Texas, nothing like hooking a big bass on a fly to get the blood to flowing!
