How is this Guard done?

This Is the John White Autumn Bowie. I like this type of guard on a full tang knife but am not sure how you would make, assemble and finish one like it.

I'm assuming it has to be done in 2 parts right.

Anyone know how to do this type of guard?

Ray?

It looks to me like it's a hidden tang, one piece guard with one or more additional spacers, and then the tang was framed. The result is that it loooks like a full tang, but it has a one -piece guard.

I think NJ has it too and I don't doubt that you can do it. MY thought would be that, nice as it is, it would look better with a one piece handle - always shows off the fancy wood handle better...

Well heck, if you want a challenge then try it out using woven carbon fiber handle slabs with anodized titanium handle frame. . .how cool would that look?

Heck, if you want a real challenge, try making a sheath as nice as that one...

John has indeed given this one a frame tang. I can't give you a direct link to any of them but he has posted a dissassembled frame tang knife on other forums in the past which may give you a better idea of how the pieces fit together. If you do a search, you may be able to find one of them. (By doing a frame tang you can make the tang/guard fit just like on a stick tang.)

If you have questions feel free to send me a PM.

Gary

Thanks Gary, a search did indeed turn up a step by step.

I believe Dr. Jim also showed how to do this mortise and frame tang in his "The Complete Bladesmith", but loaned the book to a student and cannot access it at present. I know I've seen it in print somewhere, as it's principals of construction were used often in dogbone and coffin handled bowies and dirks.

The process can be found in The Master Bladesmith pages 114-119. A book well worth having. Mine's coming apart I've used it so much.
