Damascus filework

Got a few damascus blanks in the mail yesterday that I am playing with. I wanted to do some filework on the spine of one of them I am making for my wife (yes she wants a knife). Can I do the filework on a blank that is already hardened and tempered? What is the best way to protect the blade when clamping it in a vise?

Also howdo I post pics here??

Thanks for any and all help as this is an addicting hobby!

Sandwich it in leather when in the vise. A sharp chainsaw file might still work, otherwise diamond round and three square files for hardened steel.

I use a flex shaft tool (Foredom type) with silicon carbide 1/4" bits and thin cut-off wheels when doing vine and thorn work on my ADS blades. They're hardened to 58/60. Use medium to slow speeds and it goes well.
