Old japanese? knife

can anyone tell me about this knife? i.e; approximate age, origin, etc. Afriend of mine found it at athrift store when he asked me to clean it up and sharpen it , Idecided to see if I could find out about it first. Thanks.
As you can probably tell I some how failed inserting aphoto???
