Drop point with curly cottonwood.

Just finished this one up for my father in law. It's my take on a drop point hunter.

Aldo's 1084, differentially hardened, stabilized cottonwood (stabilized by Jon Kennedy) with black liners. Nothing to fancy but I like it. I sure hope he likes it too!

Looking good, i like the file work on the spine. What are the bands in the cottonwood, is it curly or is that a normal pattern in the wood?

That's a gorgeous knife man, always like seeing your stuff. The handle and spine look great, keep it up.

Don't need "fancy". Good clean simple work speaks for itself. He should love it!

Couldn't agree with Carl more. Nice, simple, straight forward, and very well executed. That handle really stands out.

Doug

Did you have the Cottonwood stabilized?

I remember working with some Cottonwood lumber in my younger days and if I am remember correctly it was a fairly soft lumber but, once it had dried properly it was hard to drive a nail into and nearly impossible to pull one back out of !

We built a grain elevator out of it. Some of the Cottonwood lumber we he had to frame out with had been cut that year and it was fairly soft. Then he had some that had been cut nearly twenty years and stored out of the weather it was hard as brick bates. If you bent a nail you might as well cut the nail off as you couldn't pull it, nine times out ten you would either break the nail or rip the head off!

All that that had been stored for twenty years was rough cut, we had some full 2 " X a full 12" planks 18' long we used as walk boards for scaffolding. I was about 15yrs of age and that is where I learned to never wrap a rope around your hand when using a rope to lift or lower something. One of those planks got away and the rope I had wrapped around my hand nearly took it off.
I had to stand there and wait for my Dad to tie off his end and climb down two stories and back up two stories on my side to get too me and take the load off of my crushed hand. I couldn't lift the weight of the board one handed once it got away and the hand with the rope wrapped around it was useless till I could get the weight off of it. That was a lesson I never forgot!

If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner!

Thanks guys!

C Craft, Jon Kennedy here on the forum stabilized it. It's definatly harder then in stabilized cotton wood. I wouldn't like being in that situation that's for sure. No major injuries?

No nothing permanently hurt mostly my pride even short term. My Dad had told me that before and of course he had to remind me of that when he got me out of a bind, but I didn't get why it was so dangerous to wrap a rope around your hand untill that moment!

I was a young buck at the time and I felt like crying it hurt so bad at the time but, wasn't going to let my Dad see me cry so just sucked it up! Like he used to say I don't see no blood or guts so I assume your OK!

How much would be asking per knife? Me and my father are looking for a grand prize for the Black hills stock show sheep shearing contest and thought that one of these would be great or something very similar.

Tough lesson (not a lesson if you don't survive). All of us that have worked like that know what you mean. Done enough "suckin' it up" to change the weather patterns when I was growing up.
My Pop told me getting a tattoo would be stupid as I'd just mess it up......boy, was he right! (as usual)
