Tanto blade, chop sticks, ray skin sheath ????

I confess total ignorance on this one. It came to me as part of a trade with no additional information. Anybody know?

Any markings on the ricasso, Buddy? Three interlocking circles?? That fuller looks like that found on a WW2 JPZ bayonet. Recycled?

I maybe igonrat on this, but I have seen once one similar, and it was a chinese travelers kit. The knife is used to cut things and defense, and all sort of things a knife shuld do. The chopsticks are for eating of course. That might have been the tool of a medium wealth merchant. The clue is that Chinse (and other continental Asian cultures) sticks are much longer than the japanese sticks. The baionet idea is good. Looks like the tip was broken and remade. Try to test the tip to see if it really is hardened, if you can do that without harming the blade.

It's called a "Trousse" (Levine's Guide to Knive, 4th ed., pg. 477) The set is for food preparation and eating. The guide says they are from China, Mongolia, and Tibet.

Chop sticks are 10 5/8 in. and made of ivory. There is a mark on the ricasso which I will attempt to photograph and post. Blade is 7 1/2 in. and OAL is 11 5/8 in. Fuller on both sides and blade is evenly tapered to the tip, more or less flat-ground. Looks like it has been used quite a bit but pretty well cared for too. Thanks for the ideas everyone.

LG4 goes on to say that some of the laminated blade sets are worth $2,000. Might be worth getting appraised. Any indication of a hamon or decarb line indicating it is laminated?

I saw an artical on polishing katana blades. They were talking about WWII bring backs that the finishes had been distroyed by improper polishing. If that blade means anything to you, it might be worth it to have it professionaly polished. Who knows what is under that patena. Just a thought.
